Step By Step Guide To Wire A Ceiling Fan

Attaching a ceiling fan is an easy job that you can do yourself. By being little careful, you can successfully do the connection. Use right size of nuts for making the connections and tightly close them. Properly cover the connections with an electric tape to avoid any shock.

In general you will find 4 wires for attaching your ceiling fan. These wires have different colors (black, white, green and red/blue or black/white striped) and each of this color have its own significance.

Black wire of ceiling fan is used to connect the hot terminal of the fan and for connecting hot terminal of light kit, red/blue/striped is used. For connecting the neutral terminal of the ceiling fan white wire is used. In the end, for whole setup green wire can be used to make ground connection.

While attaching the ceiling fan, neutral (white) wire from the ceiling fan assembly should be attached to the neutral (usually white) lead from the house wiring. One thing to note is that you may encounter a white wire while wiring the ceiling fan that has a marked piece of colored tape attached. This colored tape mostly signifies that this white wire is being used as something other than a neutral.

As green wire is used for making grounded connection of your ceiling fan assembly therefore you need to attach it to ground wire of your homes wiring. If ground wire is not there in the wires of your house then you may connect the green wire of the ceiling fan to electrical box or metal conduit that have a grounded connection.

Now you are left with two leads associated with the ceiling fan. These are the hot wires for the ceiling fan and its light kit. In case your ceiling fan doesn’t have a light kit then connect the black wire to the hot lead (usually black) from your power supply.

If your ceiling fan has a light kit then you need to connect both wires of the fan to the hot power supply lead, unless your house is wired to switch the ceiling fan and light independently.

After this your job is done. Like this you can easily connect a ceiling fan. However, you may face problems while doing it for first time, so call an expert who can help you in doing it successfully.
