If the garden shed you purchase is not made from pressure treated or cedar wood then to ensure that it lasts you will need to make sure that you take care of it regularly. Generally today most garden sheds do come with some sort of basic treatment such as a wood based primer to protect them but this won’t be sufficient to ensure that they last for many years to come. Below we take a look some of the kinds of garden shed treatments available and why they may be needed.
So why should you regularly treat your garden shed after it has been constructed? The main reason for anyone to treat a garden shed using the kinds of treatments we mention below is to ensure that it lasts for many years to come. The main problem with many garden sheds today is that they are not very resilient unless made from pressure treated or cedar wood and changes in the weather can lead to them deteriorating very quickly. However by applying a good quality treatment to the sheds wood provides it with protection to prevent the weather from getting into it and damaging it.
Above we have shown you why it is so important to regularly treat your garden shed after it has been built. Now let us take a look at the kinds of treatments that one should be considering using for your garden shed.
Treatment 1 ” Creosote Substitute
There are several products on the market today that you can use that are known as this form of treatment such as Creotreat or Creotech. Both of them will provide more than enough protection to your shed but are far better if you mix 5 parts of this product to 1 part clean engine oil. Although they are a good wood preservative the engine oil helps to prevent the wood from cracking or becoming brittle and adds an extra water proof layer to the wood.
This treatment is also easy to apply but you will need a special sprayer to do so. Although this is the cheapest way of increasing how long your garden shed lasts the colour range is limited, in fact the only colour you can spray your shed with this is brown.
Treatment 2 ” Wood Preservative
This you can use either on its own or as the base coat for when you are going to be painting your garden shed. If you do intend to paint your shed after applying this particular form of garden shed treatments then you need to make sure it is one which can be painted over. If you dont check out this requirement beforehand then you will find that the paint will simply slide off the shed walls and on to the floor. Also it is better if you used a spirit based preservative rather than the water based one as this soaks into the wood far better and so ensures that protection of it is higher.
Treatment 3 ” Combined Preservative, Colour and Waterproof Agent
This of all the garden shed treatments available is proving to be very popular with homeowners and just as with treatment 2 you should go for the spirit rather than the water based types. It is also important that if the wood of your shed has been planed then you use a treatment which is suitable for these types because if you don’t over time the coating will begin to peel and leave the wood underneath unprotected from the elements. There are a great number of advantages to be had from using this kind of treatment and the main one of these being is it comes in a wide choice of colours as well as being quick and easy to apply.
